Ships in churches often symbolise something safe when life around you is unsafe. The ship symbolises your belief and is somtheing that you can carry within your heart.
Rostock has a long and interesting history that goes back to the Hanseatic era when Rostock was one of the more important cities in the Hanseatic league. Rostock and the peoples around the south baltic sea often got in contact with eachother not only to trade but also in changing ideas. This lead to new influenses in many fields. New jobs were created and that lead directly to the need of new educational training.Rostock university was founded in 1419. This is an eaxmple of early cross-border collaboration.
Schooldays during the time of the DDR were regulated with strict disciplin and rules that were supposed to be followed. The children started their days at 07:30 and lasted until 13:00. After school you were supposed to attend in the young pioneers or FDJ for the older children. In order to go to the university you had to go to the gymnasium for two years. After these two years you were qualified for the university but there were only two or three pupils per class that had that oportunity.....
It was a teachers council that decided who was qualified for the university. Decisions was based on social skills, results from sport events and if you had participated in FDJ. You also had to have an average of 1.5 in your grades ( wich means that an the number 1 equals an A in for example the American school system). So in other words you had to be an academic top athlete.
At the department of biology you can find the reamins of Magister Niclas who was active as a teacher in leadership and organisation in the 1800:s
